Explains Computer Care’s Simon Pardo:
“It’s easy for SMEs to fall into the trap of not having proper backups for their IT systems. Computer systems can fail for numerous reasons including hard drives. It's therefore important to have robust backup systems in place.”
However, if the worse comes to worse, all is not lost. Simon says that he was recently called to fix his brother-in-law’s Toshiba.
“The Toshiba hard drive uses a fluid bearing. The bearing had ceased up and the drive no longer worked. In order to recover the data I had to heat the centre of the disk to 130°C, then place the disk into a Linux recovery environment and copy the information off the failed drive to a good one (see images below). A normal data recovery for a failed drive would be around £800 – we did this for £250.
Computer Care’s Business Development Manager, Tony Fry, says that there are now backup systems such as the Datto range of solutions which lets you continue working even in the event of complete site loss.
“It’s not enough to only install a backup drive. With Datto, for instance, software, custom hardware and virtual options are all connected to the Datto cloud infrastructure so if the worse does happen clients can carry on operations.”
“Having a robust backup system gives not only complete piece of mind but can save both time and money in lost business. As Simon has demonstrated again, we will go to extraordinary lengths to make sure clients’ IT systems are working as they should.”
